Tin can: A packaging material meeting the environmental demands
As ISO-14000, the international environmental management standard is soon to be put into practice, it is foreseeable that tin can, a packaging material with characteristics of low pollution, recyclability and resource saving, may be broadly developed for extensive applications in the future:

1. Low pollution:
Tinplate, a major source of material for making can containers, is indeed harmless to the environment as it can be decomposed over time back to the nature through the automatic process of oxidation that reverts the material back to its original state, i.e. iron oxide. Therefore, stacks of waste tin cans can be broke down, without scrap leftover, over time without causing any damages to the environment. Moreover, application of tin can helps maintain the ecological balance without having to deforestation.

2. Recyclability:
A special characteristic that is unique to tin itself is its magnet adsorption which makes it possible to separate tin cans from the rest of waste by using a magnetic separator. The magnetic separation process can help identify 80% of the cans from a collection of waste. Also, the invention of the environmental protection cap/cover has not only made the use of cans safer and healthier, but also effectively reduce the amount of waste; thus offering a direct and prominent impact to recycling operations.

3. Resource saving:
In the aspect of removing contaminated residue from cans, currently there is shredder equipment available that can effectively remove more than 98% of the contaminated residue attached, thus making high quality of iron scraps. Besides, according to information from U.S., Al EOE (Aluminum easy open end) offer great values to the remaking of scrap iron because the existence of Al EOE helps reduce the consumption of hot meal during steel-making; thus reducing the overall costs during the steel making process. In addition, in the aspect of energy saving, according to what are noted in reports, in comparison to iron making, the steel making with the use of tinplate scrap can help save 230m3 of natural gas for every ton of iron scraps used. In conclusion, in line with the future product trends, the process of recycling and remaking of tin helps reduce the negative impact to the environment and energy in the world.
